Six classic rum cocktails every home bar should know

Daiquiri, Mojito, Cuba Libre, Dark 'n' Stormy, Piña Colada and Mai Tai, in a nutshell.

These six drinks cover most of what rum does well. Each has a story, and each is easy to make once you know the idea.

Daiquiri

Rum, lime juice and sugar, shaken hard and served up. Traditionally credited to Cuba around 1900. The classic ratio is about 60 ml rum, 22 ml lime juice and 15 ml sugar syrup. See our fruit-led Pink Dream Daiquiri.

Mojito

Rum, lime, sugar, mint and soda over crushed ice. A Cuban classic and still one of the most ordered cocktails in the world. Try our Lychee Bliss Mojito.

Cuba Libre

Rum, cola and a wedge of lime. Simple and widely loved. Our Velvet & Cola is a spiced take.

Dark 'n' Stormy

Dark rum floated over ginger beer with lime. It is closely associated with Bermuda. A Velvet & Ginger follows the same idea.

Piña Colada

Rum, coconut cream and pineapple juice, blended or shaken with ice. It comes from Puerto Rico in the 1950s, and more than one bartender claims to have invented it.

Mai Tai

Rum, lime, orange liqueur and an almond syrup called orgeat. Created in the 1940s in California, with a long-running friendly dispute about who invented it.
