Spiced rum explained

What spiced rum is, how it differs from dark rum, and how to enjoy it.

Spiced rum is rum with spices added after distillation. It is a popular style, and often a first step for people new to rum.

What goes in it

Common ingredients are vanilla, cinnamon, clove, nutmeg, pepper, orange peel and cassia. Each producer has its own mix. Some spiced rums are also lightly sweetened.

Spiced is not the same as dark

A dark rum gets its flavour largely from the cane and from ageing. A spiced rum gets part of its flavour from added spices. The colour can be similar, but the taste is warmer and more aromatic.

How to enjoy it

Serve it over ice with a squeeze of lime, mix it long with ginger beer or cola, or use it in an Old Fashioned. The warm spice works with citrus, ginger, apple and coffee. Our Spiced Velvet suits exactly these serves: try the Old Fashioned, the Velvet & Ginger or the Velvet & Cola.

A note on labels

Because the rules for spiced and flavoured products differ between countries, always read the label to see how a product is described.

Enjoy responsibly.
