Rum for your home bar: what to keep and how to serve it

A short shopping list and a few habits that make every drink better.

You do not need a lot to make good rum drinks at home. A small, well-chosen set will cover most occasions.

The bottles

One light rum for fresh, citrusy drinks. One richer rum, aged or spiced, for sipping and stirred drinks. If you want a third, add a fruit-led bottle for easy long drinks. Our three blends, Pink Dream, Lychee Bliss and Spiced Velvet, suit relaxed, long serves.

The extras

Fresh limes and lemons, a bottle of soda water, tonic and ginger beer, sugar syrup (equal parts sugar and hot water), mint, and a few oranges.

The kit

A shaker, a jigger or measuring cup, a long spoon, a strainer and a good supply of ice. Tall glasses and a couple of tumblers cover nearly every drink.

Storage

Keep bottles upright, closed, away from heat and direct sunlight. Rum does not improve once opened and bottled, but it keeps well for a long time when sealed properly.

Serve with care

Measure your pours, offer water and non-alcoholic options, and make it easy for guests who are driving to say no. See also The sunset session for hosting ideas.

Enjoy responsibly.
